Following our earlier analysis of return dispersion across leading private-credit vehicles, our latest special report shifts the focus to early signs of credit stress at the BDC level. Screening 52 public and non-traded BDCs across non-accruals, PIK income, and NAV/balance-sheet resilience reveals widening divergence well ahead of headline defaults.
- Credit quality: FSK’s non-accruals remain elevated at 4.2% of fair value, versus 0.3% for GBDC and 0.2% for OCIC.
- Earnings quality: PIK represents 13.5% and 11.2% of investment income for FSK and OBDC, compared with just 0.1% for ASIF.
- Resilience: FSK and BXSL show NAV pressure alongside higher leverage and thinner asset coverage, while HTGC and TBCIF exhibit stronger resilience.
The takeaway: private credit is increasingly a surveillance market, where vehicle-level monitoring of non-accruals, PIK, NAV and balance-sheet resilience can identify emerging stress before it appears in reported defaults.
